Arbitration Proceedings

National and international arbitration proceedings constitute the main focus of my work, primarily as an arbitrator, but also as an expert or a lawyer.

In my work as an arbitrator I attach great importance to a personal and in depth consideration of each individual case, including its non-legal aspects. Moreover, I attempt to take account of the parties’ interest in a swift, cost-efficient and amicable dispute settlement by conducting the proceeding smoothly and expeditiously.

To date, I have acted in over 95 arbitral proceedings with an overall value of more than 3 billion EUR – as Chairman of the Tribunal, as Sole Arbitrator, as Party-Appointed Arbitrator or Emergency Arbitrator. These proceedings have included both ad hoc proceedings (UNCITRAL, German Code of Civil Procedure) and institutional proceedings (DIS, ICC, DIA, VIAC, SCC, Swiss Rules, KCAB und WIPO) and involved also state parties.

The cases mainly related to national and international contract law (trade, construction industry, energy industry, financial sector) and post-M&A disputes. Some of the cases I acted on also involved licensing agreements and R&D contracts or banking law.

I am regularly mentioned as one of the leading German arbitration experts in national and international rankings. Among others, Chambers and Who’s Who list me since several years as one of the Most in Demand Arbitrators in Germany (Band 1). In 2017/2019 is was selected by the Handelsblatt/Legal Experts as Lawyer of the year in Germany/North-Rhine-Westphalia for the category Arbitration/Mediation.
